It will tolerate partial shade and does so in my walled garden where it resides near a wall but I feel sure it wouldn't survive in full shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. It hates wet roots and so, when I plant a rosemary, I always dig a deep hole and add plenty of gravel or grit to ensure good drainage. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure.
